Price range (USD/mo)

Compute Pricing (6 ranked · 1 unscored)

Ranked by direct CPU Mark per $ (measured CPU throughput value first) for the selected workload — the best-value fitting plan is #1. In All view, dedicated and shared are grouped separately and ranked within their class — filter by CPU class for a global ranking. Use the optional calculated USD/mo range to narrow the list, or the sortable Calculated Cost column to compare invoices; neither changes the value ranking. Rows without a usable benchmark remain visible but are not ranked; explicit dual-socket captures are proportionally allocated and labeled estimates.

About this ranking — method, disclosure & shared vs dedicated (expand)

Best-value plans for 2 vCPU / 4 GB RAM / 5 TB BW, ranked by direct CPU Mark per $ (the best-value fitting plan is #1). Click column headers to re-sort by calculated invoice or specs. CPU Mark / $ = effective PassMark CPU Mark ÷ calculated monthly USD invoice (plan plus any bandwidth overage) — direct measured CPU throughput per dollar, graded A–F within each CPU class and sortable via the "CPU Mark/$" column. A whole-machine row receives the full sourced CPU Mark; a dedicated slice receives CPU Mark × (assigned plan allocation ÷ the benchmark's matching host allocation unit). RAM, disk and bandwidth are shown for sizing but carry zero weight. Each provider is represented by its highest-scoring fitting plan; a lower-cost fitting plan is shown only as optional price context. Rows without a usable exact benchmark remain visible but are not ranked. Explicit multi-socket captures are allocated over their recorded host topology and labeled as estimates.

Method & caveats

CPU Mark / $ score: this is a direct PassMark CPU Mark divided by the calculated monthly USD invoice, not a normalized factor or a RAM/disk score. RAM, storage and bandwidth remain sizing columns and carry zero weight, so a storage-heavy plan cannot game the ranking. Shared-vCPU rows are burst ceilings that may be throttled; dedicated-core rows are closer to guaranteed throughput. Each scored row links its own PassMark capture and verified date. If the exact CPU or topology cannot be verified, the row stays visible as unscored and is excluded from the numeric ranking. Topology matters: a WHOLE dedicated server receives the named machine's full sourced PassMark score, including its logical threads. A DEDICATED SLICE receives only its percentage of the host, using the plan's explicit allocation unit: generic vCPU plans use logical threads, while a vendor promise of dedicated physical cores uses physical cores. When a multi-socket capture includes explicit socket count and host topology, we allocate that aggregate score proportionally and label the result as an estimate; for netcup the current basis is 4/192 physical cores of the two-CPU capture (equivalent to halving the aggregate and using 4/96 of one CPU), not 4/384 threads. Unknown topology remains unscored rather than being guessed. The score uses the captured PassMark result as-is; no release-year adjustment is added.

Coverage: the catalog now has sourced single-CPU PassMark records for the named OVH Eco, OVH Dedicated, Hetzner Robot and InterServer CPUs, plus the BuyVM Ryzen 9 3900X. netcup's RS G12 plans run EPYC 9645, and PassMark currently exposes a dual-socket n=1 record; those slices receive a proportional host allocation marked as an estimate (the raw 159,591 aggregate and 3,165 single-thread-per-CPU figure remain visible). The OVH Eco dual-CPU labels and unresolved Ryzen 9 9950X label are left unscored because their usable host topology is not captured. Shared tiers without a published CPU model are shown for price/spec context but do not receive a made-up CPU score. The selected scored plan is always the highest direct CPU Mark/$ fitting plan; its invoice is the sortable Calculated Cost.

Tax basis: displayed amounts are USD-equivalents, while each provider row keeps its captured VAT/sales-tax basis. Some source quotes include tax and others exclude it; conversion does not make those tax bases identical. VAT may still be added at invoice at the rate that applies to your country/status — use the linked vendor sheet for an ex-VAT comparison.

Disclosure: we may earn a referral commission when you sign up with some listed providers via the “Visit” links. Rankings, prices, and scores are computed independently of referrals — providers without programs are ranked on identical terms.

Shared vs dedicated — what you actually get

A fair-share (shared) vCPU is a nominal burst ceiling: the row says “2 vCPU”, but that capacity is pooled with other tenants and only guaranteed while nobody else loads the host. A dedicated core is pinned to your server — the spec on the price tag is the spec under load. Neither class can go over its ceiling, but with fair-share you can land far under it at exactly the moment you need the headroom most.

Running any server carries the same administrative overhead — updates, monitoring, firewall, backups. That fixed effort amortizes better against capacity you can rely on, which is why our rankings default to dedicated-class plans and keep fair-share plans in an explicitly labelled budget section rather than crowning them as overall winners.

The practical ladder: start free, then buy dedicated. Oracle's Always Free tier, for example, includes two always-free micro instances plus Arm capacity — enough to measure a real workload before spending anything. Once your load is measured and persistent, buy the smallest dedicated plan that covers it. Fair-share makes sense mainly for bursty, light workloads (blogs, low-traffic apps) where even a fraction of a core at peak is enough — and where the price gap to entry-level dedicated (~3–4×) outweighs the variance.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the cheapest VPS in 2026?
For a 2 vCPU / 4 GB RAM server, the lowest displayed USD-equivalent depends on the captured plan and your bandwidth requirements. Use our interactive calculator to compare the current provider rows for your specific workload; the linked vendor sheet remains the source for the invoice currency.
Hetzner vs DigitalOcean: which is cheaper?
Hetzner is often cheaper per vCPU/RAM in the calculator, while DigitalOcean offers more global regions and a richer managed Kubernetes and DB ecosystem. Compare the USD-equivalent totals for the exact 2 vCPU / 4 GB / bandwidth workload rather than relying on a stale plan headline.
What does EU-sovereign hosting mean?
EU-sovereign means the hosting provider is incorporated and headquartered within the European Union, governed strictly by GDPR, and outside the direct reach of extraterritorial surveillance laws like the US CLOUD Act (which can still reach EU subsidiaries of US companies — these providers are EU-incorporated). Nine providers in this catalog are EU-sovereign: Hetzner Cloud/Robot (DE), Contabo (DE), OVHcloud Advance and OVH Eco/Kimsufi (FR), netcup (DE), UpCloud (FI), and IONOS (DE) — all flagged in the EU Sovereign column.
How does VPS bandwidth and overage pricing work?
Most cloud providers bundle an outbound bandwidth quota (1 TB to 20 TB) with free inbound traffic. Overage beyond this quota is displayed in USD-equivalents across this catalog. Providers like Contabo, OVHcloud, and BuyVM provide unmetered bandwidth with zero overage charges, governed only by port uplink speeds.
Shared vs dedicated vCPU: what is the difference?
Shared vCPU instances share physical host CPU time with other tenants and are ideal for general web servers, APIs, and microservices. Dedicated vCPU plans pin physical cores exclusively to your virtual machine for 100% sustained high-performance computing without noisy-neighbor throttling.
What is the best VPS for high bandwidth streaming and storage?
For high bandwidth workloads, Contabo (fully unmetered traffic on a shared port), OVHcloud (unmetered up to 3 Gbps port), and BuyVM (unmetered 1 Gbps port with $1.25/256GB block storage slabs) offer the most cost-effective hosting without bandwidth penalty fees.
